So... I just got back from a six day ranger training trek in the backcountry. It was awesome. I did not sleep in a tent once, instead i medow crashed every night with my training crew. My crew was made up of five guys and two girls. The head ranger that trained us was Heather and she was from utah. The rest of the crew were Paul from St. Louis, Jeff from San Diego, Sarah from Arizona, Connor from ohio, and Martin from North Carolina. We left for the trek at 2:30 saturday and got dropped off at lovers leap turn around. We hiked in to lovers leap campsite and set up bear bags and rain fly. We made a kick ass dinner and chilled. Every night someone did there life story and the first night was the night i did mine. They all enjoyed it. We tossed the bee with another crew in the medow till it was too dark. When it was dark, we laid down our ground mats and sleeping bags in the medow. It was pretty cold, but we all stayed warm. Whats amazing about being out in the backcountry is that the stars are amazing. You can see every constalation from major ursa to draco. Also, you can see around ten satelites a night. I have never seen so many shooting stars in one night either.
The next morning we woke up, ate breakfast, and broke camp. From lovers leap we had a nice hike up to aguila. Aguila has a nice view over the ranch. We did some more training on how to be rangers. We chilled with some other training crews. We also purified alot of water that night for dinner and the hike the next day. Once again we set up our pads and bags out in a medow. The stars that night were even better than before. In fact, they continued to get even better night after night of training.
We all woke up pretty early and ate a solid breakfast of granola and gorp. We hydrated up and hit the trail for fowler mesa. Fowler mesa could be seen right above our campsite, but we have to take a trail around to get up to the mesa. At fowler mesa we did low impact camping. This means that there were no designated bear cables, sumps, or campfire rings. We had to make all of them ourselves. Fowler was probably the coolest place we crashed. While doing a first aid course out on top of fowler in a medow we saw a bear. It was a brown bear and it stood up. We got some pretty sweet pics of it checking us out. That night we ate a good dinner and had a first aid test. The sunset was sureal and we once again medow crashed on top of fowler. This was the coldest night. Not only was it cold, but the wind was powerful. Stay tune for day 4, 5, 6
